I love making art and for as much as I love it, I haven't made enough time in my life to do it lately.
Fortunately, I'm a docent for my kids' parent-run art program. Which means 5 times in a school year, I am trained by an artist on a project that I turn around and teach the class.
Today we learned a little about Gustav Klimt and created a multi-media piece inspired by his amazing work.
I was so inspired by the lecture and furthermore by doing the project that I decided I would like to be him. Or at least channel him for a time. What fun it must have been to create those pieces!
Our process entailed several steps. We had two strips of water color paper. First we colored one with water pastels for the background after which we applied a wet brush to "paint" the pastels around.
We then moved on to the second strip of water color paper and sketched our Klimt-inspired figure with pencil.
Afterwards, outlining in two widths of Sharpie marker. I loved the depth & interst the two widths of marker added. Then water pastels were added to our figure with a wet brush. Details to her robe or caftan were added using our Sharpies. The final touch on the figure was metalic gold pen highlights.
Our figure was cut out and layered a top the background and detailng added to that if so inspired.
The instructor suggested adding glitter and other bling. In the interest of time, however, our group had to stop there. That extra bling would have been fun, though!
My initial intention was to have my lady with her hip jutted out to the side, but then she ended up looking more like she was pregnant, so I started erasing her as another one of the docents commented that a pregnant body would be beautiful. At which moment I stopped the eraser in mid-mostion and started re-drawing her original body.
The second time around her curves weren't quite as dramatic as the first time, but she still looks pregnant!
I'm in love with how she turned out. She is rampant with flaws and there are several things I constantly think about changing, but, I'm still in love!
I am tempted to do another one. I think I have everything on hand except maybe the fine tipped Sharpie.

Remember this post just before Halloween? Well, this is what I made from the supplies in the photo, a Blue Strategist Dalek costume from Dr. Who. I did end up adding just two additional supplies to my original list.
I was quite nervous to make this when I first started out. My son came home and told me he wanted to be a Dalek. I had never seen one before, so of course I turned to google. Once I saw photos, I was even more afraid and I had no idea how I was going to pull it off. With the help of Pinterest and google, I was able to piece together several ideas as well as come up with a few of my own, to make his costume.
I'm pleased with how it turned out and discovered it came together quickly. It was not complex. He got quite a reaction while trick or treating, so that was a nice bonus. Most people had no idea what he was, but were impressed, none the less. And those who did know, LOVED it even more!

Starting to make our costumes this weekend. Can you guess what Braden is going to be? The only thing missing is a glue gun. There is a trash can, styrofoam balls, a colander, plunger (brand new), mini plunger, gorilla tape, the innards of a paint roller, pipe insulation and silver spray spray paint. Potential supplies to be added: thin flat wooden rings.
I'll post updates as we make it!!
Grate your cheese, sprinkle generously in the middle of one tortilla. With a pizza knife, cut a second tortilla in strips. Lay strips in a haphazard criss-cross pattern over the cheese, leaving space for eyes. Place two round edible objects for eyes and cook like a normal quesadilla. We fire up our stovetop griddle (medium heat) and cook until cheese is melted.
Our eyes are made from two pieces of Count Chocula cereal. It was the only thing we had around the house!

If you've stopped by my blog over the past few weeks, you may have noticed a significant reduction in my activity. Now that I've been blogging for almost 5 years (since July 2008), I've learned that every once in a while I need a major break. This is one of those times. This month there weren't any huge milestones or special events, so we have just ONE family photo and it is silly & full of life. I love it - blurriness and all. I love that all three boys were such good sports when I called them all outside and told them what were were about to do. They were patient as we gave it a few tries until we got a fairly decent one. My family's the best!

We have a lot of family photos this month!
We started our month off with a very special occasion. Our youngest son received his First Holy Communion! We all posed in front of this pretty wall right after the ceremony - all of us in our best clothes! I don't think we've ever all looked so nice since the boys were babies & toddlers!
Then, we went camping...
French toast for lunch cooked over a camp fire. We were meant to have it for breakfast, but because we spent the previous night in a hotel (I got sick) our meal was delayed.
Welcome to Week 16 of Project Life here at Nihao, Cupcake! Blog.
This week only had a few photos which means this spread was much easier and faster to pull together.
I used one of my homemade stamps to make the date/title card. I was in a hurry to take photos before I lost the light so I haven't yet written in the date.
The photo on the bottom left is one of the self-portraits I took, and then spliced together, from my new monthly photography challenge - 4 Photos; 4 Ways. (Go here, to check it out. Considering joining along and adding your link!)
On the top right photo I altered a Valentine's label and made it neutral by trimming the edge with the themed graphic and covering the little bit that was left with a star.
The kraft banner sticker on the 3x4 photo of my husband was made by trimming down the scraps from a sheet of Martha Stewart by Avery labels. I had originally seen a package of kraft adhesive banners that I was tempted to buy, but then I realized I could easily make some of my own by using supplies I already had at home. Gotta love that!
APRIL DAY IN THE LIFE

Here is my finished March Day in the Life insert I never shared last week.
I used Design E folded in half. This is the front side with all of my journaling. For the background I enlarged a photo of our Easter eggs and reduced the opacity so it wouldn't take away from the text. I like the idea of it, but I don't think I love the drab colors.

And the inside. I love including as many photos as I can! I still had a few that wouldn't fit.
This Mother's Day questionaire is adorable! And why not be shameless like the author, download it and have your husband, nanny, grandparent, friend, (etc) sit with the kids and fill it out for you for Mother's Day or any day for that matter! I'm a big fan of questionaires. And this is a good one!

Welcome to Week 15 of my Project Life! I am still keeping up as hoped and taking at least one photo a day. I have not missed a day yet! I can't believe it. It is the first time in three+ years. Hurray!
This week was spring break for our kids so we went camping. We had not been since before we moved to China so the kids were incredibly excited and my husband and I were a little rusty. We couldn't remember exactly what supplies were stored away in our camping bins. But we quickly found out and despite being a bit cold the first night, it was like riding a bike... that is until I got food poisoning the first morning. We traced it back to a stop on the way up - not from camping food!
I did manage to complete my March Day in the Life as well as the hole in my layout last week. I've even taken photos, but because it is so late and I need my sleep, I'll post those next week!

Over spring break our family went camping. Our boys missed it so much during the four years we lived in China. Although, we came home twice a year, there never was enough time to camp.
One of the things we discovered right before moving to China was cast iron Dutch oven cooking. A friend taught us how to do it before we moved. We were excited to try it again during this trip five years after the last time!
We forgot how fun and easy it is! You can cook almost anything using a Dutch oven. We made french toast, biscuits, dinner rolls, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, curry, rice, & cake. Can you believe that?
If you like camping, cooking over a fire or even using briquettes, I strongly recommend giving a Dutch oven a try. You will not be disappointed. I won't go into the details since I am no expert and there are lots of great websites out there with wonderful information. Just google Dutch Oven cooking - you won't be disappointed.
And the kids just couldn't believe we were cooking our own food over a real campfire.
We didn't cook everything in the dutch oven, however. I made my kids this fun & tasty Banana S'more using a sheet of aluminum foil and the heat from our fire (the last night) & the heat from our white hot briquettes (the first night).
To make a Banana S'more, all you need is a banana, knife, mini chocolate chips and mini marshmallows. Of course if you forget your mini-marshmallows like I did, you can cut up your large marshmallows.
Simply slice your banana lengthwise with the skin still on. Gently squeeze the banana from the long ends to get the slit to open slightly.
Stuff the opening with a few mini chocolate chips. Add some mini marshmallows.
Sprinkle in a few more mini chocolate chips.
Carefully wrap the entire banana in foil.
Then either set your foil-wrapped banana directly on top (or under) the camp fire or bury under white hot coals. Be sure to use a stoker or long tongs especially made for tending fires so you don't burn yourself.
Let cool a few minutes. Carefully unwrap the foil. Your Banana S'more should be cooked through, chocolate and marshmallows melted.
Using a spoon - dig in! Scopping, the insides out and eating like a dessert.

While I am pretty versed at hybrid & digi scrapbooking (early intermediate), I am taking the class because I love Cathy's classes and I love the commaraderie at Big Picture AND I was ready to crank out more traditional scrapbook pages. This is my first page since December!
It was time to mix it up a little after doing only Project Life (which I still LOVE) for the past few months.

Back in November my middle son and I traveled to Japan to attend the wedding of the daughter of some of our dearest friends. I met this family back in the 90's when I lived in Japan and taught English.
Their daughters were 4 & 6 back then and they hired me to teach three classes in their home for the daughters and about 12 other children in the neighborhood.
After the classes were over, the mother would invite me to stay over for tea. We would chat, both with dictionaries in hand. I was learning Japanese & she was learning English.
We did this every week for two years. We became close friends. The family also invited me and my husband (fiance at the time) over for dinner often and even took us on a wonderful trip of Japanese hot springs and amusement parks before we moved back to California.
When we got married their two daughters were the flower girls in our wedding!
I had always hoped I would get the opportunity to return to Japan someday and attend the wedding of their daughters. For so many reasons.
There is no greater privelege than to share in the tradition, customs & special ceremony of friends from another country and culture, especially in the intimate way that we were able to.
We were treated like family. I feel like we are family. I will cherish these memories forever. It was one of the highlights of my life!
We arrived in Kyushu (southern most Japanese island) early in the morning after more than 24 hours of travel. We walked from the train station directly to the hotel where everyone was getting dressed. We quickly changed from our travel clothes into our wedding clothes at the traditional hotel.
In the lobby of the hotel we all posed with the bride & her family before heading up the mountain to the Buddhist temple where the ceremony was to be held. Her father was joining her at the temple.
The groom's father is a Buddhist priest and they were getting married at his temple in a traditional Buddhist ceremony.
Very few Japanese have religious ceremonies now-a-days so this was a rare opportunity even for Japanese people. It is actually considered incredibly old fashioned and boring and they could not believe we actually wanted to travel as far as we did to attend. The family lives on the main island of Honshu in Kyoto, 600 miles away.
Here is the bride and her younger sister in the van ready to depart for the temple. My son and I rode up with the bride, her mother & her sister in the van. The father of the bride met us at the temple.

Hello! And welcome to our blog hop. We are celebrating our personal Project Life accomplishments for making it a quarter of the way through 2013! No easy feat.
Of course, Project Life is an extremely flexible system and can be tackled a number of ways,
But for today, we are celebrating those of us who are approaching Project Life as a 365 Day Project or probably more popularly, a 52 Week Project.
Either way it is an endurance event that takes planning, dedication, enthusiasm and a lot of creativity!
My personal committment for 2013 is to complete my weekly spreads 8 days after the week is complete and link up at TheMomCreative.com for Project Life Tuesday. So far, so good!
As a reward and final motivator to push me to this first milestone (25% through the year), I thought a fun blog hop was in order.
Tadadada.... Here is my Week 13 Project Life spread...
This is the first year I have kept up week after week after week. A large reason is that I get my photos printed weekly and I have made myself complete my weeks as I go. There is no temptation to get behind. Well, that is not entirely true. I do get tempted to put it off, but then I remember my deadline and I power through. Deadlines work really well for me.
Another thing that helps me keep up is to let myself off the hook some weeks and just do the bare minimum, meaning seven photos, seven journaling cards (give or take).
This week is the perfect example. In an ideal world I would have at least two inserts - one for Easter Sunday and the other for Day in the Life which I recorded on Saturday, but sometimes living life, is more important. This week, when I would normally be working on my spread, I had an important milestone for my youngest so family was in town visiting, the kids are off from school for Spring Break and we are camping this week! Believe me I was tempted to take a week off, but instead I took a few minutes to throw a spread together. And I love it! I hope to add those inserts in at a later time, but if I don't the week is still more than adequately recorded.

Here we are at the completion of yet another week of Project Life 2013. I am very excited that I am "keeping up" with the way I have decided to use this project to document my family's life.

I'm including less photos this week in the interest of brevity.
On the first page I am missing a photo because I just discovered it on a camera I don't use as often(we have FOUR cameras that I use and one phone) and I need to get it printed (with my next batch tomorrow).
With four different cameras and one phone, it is not the most efficient way to gather photos, but they all serve different puposes, so that is the way it shall remain.
As the saying goes, the best camera is the one you have with you!

In January of 2013 I challenged myself to make two projects per month for twelve months and share my results here at Nihao, Cupcake! Blog. Today I share with you Project #4 Quick Birthday Number Tee. To see my other 24 Projects in 12 go here.
Here is the t-shirt I made with scraps from this project for my son's 8th birthday. It was a quick & easy way I could make my son feel special on his birthday by presenting him with a custom made shirt in his favorite colors that he was excited to wear to school on his birthday announcing his new age.
I printed out a pattern/template for my "8" using Arial text in Photoshop. I opened a new 8.5x11 document. Using the TEXT tool, I created a large text box and filled it with a letter. The font size you use will depend upon the font that you select. I believe this was around 170 point. Just experiment until you get the size that you want.
If you want a thicker letter, BOLD your letter. Then print. I printed using the greyscale draft function to save on ink.
Then I cut out my pattern and pinned it on my felt scrap. Cut it out.
I wanted a little contrast on my number, so I pinned the red felt to some yellow and cut around that by hand. You can see it isn't perfect.
I pinned the bi-color "8" to the t-shirt. It was purchased at Joanns on sale. Lucky me!
After pinning my number on the shirt, I removed the paper pattern.
I machine stitched around the outside of the red eight, about an 1/8 to 1/4 inch from the edge of the red felt. I just eyeball it as I am sewing.
After stitching around the outside, I stitched around the inner circles.
If you didn't want to sew your numbers, you could use fabric glue instead.
And the t-shirt is finished! It is that simple.
