I'm trying to get back into the habit of blogging again after my break for our trip home for the holidays. The trips back and forth always throw me off for awhile. I thought I would start this week off right by joining in once again with Rebecca Cooper's The Simple Things. (I hope my links are working. Typepad seems hit or miss with them. Let me know if they don't work.)
Isn't this little guy cute? It's a turtle (in case you couldn't tell)! You can probably tell that I overcooked this little guy, but I think he is adorable nonetheless. For me he represents so much more than an over cooked hotdog wrapped in a crescent roll (made from scratch, mind you). I had another birthday party this weekend after my ten year old's belated party last weekend. So, I have been on creative overload. One of the things I love about planning birthday parties for my kids is collaborating with the birthday child so that he (I have three boys) gets what he wants and feels special. One of our ideas was to make some hot dog snails that we saw online at littlenummies.net.
I gave the snails a try, but wasn't too successful with them. Mine kept falling over so I ended up with little creatures with sidecars. Our alternative was to make turtles by simply cutting the shell with a circle cookie cutter and adhering it on top of the wrapped hotdog with some beaten egg and a pastry brush. I used a pizza cutter to put the marks on the shell. If I hadn't have turned my attention to frosting the cake in the last few minutes of baking time, they would have been perfect!
In the interest of time, I decided just to make simple pigs in a blanket, so these cuties never made it to the party. But, that didn't matter in the end. My son and I had a great time coming up with something creative and making them together. Over cooked or not, this little turtle served his purpose.
And now that we know what we are doing, we can try them again for the next party.
Stop by tomorrow for the Layout A Day (LOAD) Blog Hop. Some of us participating in LOAD this February are sharing what we do to prepare for the month long challenge of creating one scrapbook page a day!
And you may also be interested in the One Little Word Blog Hop I am organzing for the class of the same name over at Big Picture Classes taught by Ali Edwards on February 1. We will be sharing our January project and any thoughts we had about our word over the last month. (Again, let me know if these links aren't working and I will see what I can do.) And if you are enrolled in the class and want to join along, leave me a comment or email me privately and I'll add you to the list!
Thanks for stopping by!
I didn't even read the first line of the post, just saw the picture and I'm like, that's a turtle! So cute. I might try that with my kids this week.
